From explorers and pirates to settlers and watermen, the Chesapeake Bay has defined our region and culture. Singer/actor Tom Zielinski brings his voice and gives life to the history of the Bay in stories and shanties, with the audience joining in.
Included are tales of the first settlers, coming to the new Maryland colony in the 1640s. Students hear about the difficulties of sailing life, learn the hazards that can cause shipwrecks. They also hear how real pirates and privateers started their adventures in the Chesapeake Bay.
The great conflicts of American history are also included, with the telling of the burning of the Peggy Stewart in Annapolis harbor, the bombing of Ft. McHenry and the famous battle of the Civil War ironclad ships, fought right in the Bay off Virginia.
Including songs such as Blow the Man Down, The Coast of High Barbary, Yankee Doodle Dandy, You Pay Me and The Star Spangled Banner, children learn how important music is to sea faring life, as well as being a part of Maryland history.
Lots of student participation (“Can you say “Arghhh”) and fun make this a memorable way to learn about our American history, right in our own backyard.
